Gokulashtami



Gokulashtami is also a religious festival in the hindu calendar, the birth of Lord Krishna.  Janmashtami is celebrated on the 8th day of the Krishna Paksha of the Shravana month.  The festival falls in between the month of August and September in the English calendar. 


Gokulashtami has many names namely Krishna Janmashtami, Krishna Jayanthi, Ashtami Rohini, Sri Krishna Jayanthi or Sree Jayanthi according to the culture. In Goa it is famous in the name of Gokulashtami. This year it was celebrated on 17th august 2014.

On this occasion, Prayers were offered on Saturday night. The next day birthday of Krishna is celebrated at homes and also in the temples and later in the evening dahi-handi, where youths form high pyramids to break a matka, tied at a height above the ground, was held.


The dahi-handi programme was also organised in our college along with many other institutions.The best part of this festival is when you see small school students are dressed as Krishna and the girls are dressed as radha on this day.. They have various programmers organised by their schools where they break the matka is tied on a certain height. They also participate in fancy-dress competitions. You see this view in every state of the country.



There are various competition organised in the state of Goa. many teams take part in the competition and win. Matki-fod is the most loved part of this festival.. The Gujrathi people also play Dandiya on this day. The festival is finally concluded with arti of lord Krishna.
